Bed Wetting Help!

Tracking Pixel
There is hope that this sponsored post for GoodNites*TRU-FIT* machine washable underwear, will make life easier for families dealing with bedwetting.

When my husband and I started our family, we tried to consider many of the challenges we might face. Despite our preparation, bedwetting was not a challenge we anticipated. Only one of our children has dealt with bed wetting, but we quickly learned that it was not just physically draining, but emotionally draining too!

According to a GoodNites® brand study, it is estimated that 1 in 6 children between the ages of 4 and 12 (in the US) suffer from bedwetting. Also know as nocturnal enuresis. We might think that bedwetting doesn't affect other areas of our children's lives, but the American Academy of Pediatrics shows that psychologically, children who wet the bed do not want to participate in fun activities, such as sleepovers, because of their fear and embarrassment. And, before you think your child is the "only one", know that bedwetting is a fairly common condition.

Kids wet the bed for many different reasons. The first, and most important thing to remember if we have a child who wets the bed, is that we have to be patient. We should never punish our children if they wet the bed, or shame them if it happens. Threatening and demeaning is also out of the question. They are not doing it on purpose.

For me, the best way to avoid the negative thoughts and frustrations, especially amongst the extra laundry every single day, was to put myself in our child's shoes. Yep, I would constantly ask myself how they must feel. Cold, wet, stressed, tired, embarrassed, nervous about parental response, nervous about their friends finding out... the list goes on. These thoughts and understandings made it so much easier to be patient.

We also did the following....

  • Eliminated an excessive amount of liquid within two hours of bed.
  • Woke our child up and took them to the bathroom right before WE went to bed.
  • Analyzed any physiological stresses they might be dealing with. Like a recent move, a new school, an unsettled family life, divorce...anything that might be taking an emotional toll.
  • Committed to spend more one-on-one time with our child, to strengthen our relationship and to make sure they weren't wetting the bed for attention.
  • Took our child to the doctor to make sure there wasn't a medical condition.
  • Gave ourselves permission to use protective bedding and protective underwear. Giving myself permission was a big deal. It eliminated shame and blame. It also gave our child the power to "clean" themselves up if they wet the bed.
If bedwetting is something you are dealing with at your house, don't wait to protect the bed or the pjs. The GoodNites*TRU-FIT* Underwear are a perfect solution.

They are real, machine washable underwear, you can purchase them at Target, and they wash and wear just like real underwear. They have a disposable liner that keeps pj's and sheets dry.

Don't forget to use the 2 dollar off coupon that is "on package."

Bed Time Snacks with Brummel and Brown

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Brummel and Brown.

Does anyone in your family ever want a little bedtime snack? My husband has taught our kids that toast with butter makes for a great snack before bed. :)

The kids don't worry about what they are eating, they just know it tastes good, but as a mom, I worry about too much butter, too much sugar, you know, the usual unhealthy stuff. We have tried different sugar substitutes and even a few substitutes for butter, but I can't ever get my hubby and the kids to give up the butter.

Our kids love yogurt, so when I recently learned that Brummel and Brown was a butter substitute, made with nonfat yogurt, I hoped I had a good shot at getting the kids to give it try on their toast.

I did my research. The spread has 50% less fat than butter, zero cholesterol and 0 grams of trans fat per serving. Plus, you can use the spread alone, or cook with it in recipes.

Instead of telling the family that I was going to make the switch, I loaded up their toast with Brummel and Brown spread and stood back to see what they said. "Yum, can I have more", was all I heard. No complaints, no concerns, no questions about where the butter went. They loved it. Hubby included.

I did a little more testing and tried the stir fry recipe on their facebook page. Delicious! After a week of using the spread, the kids have decided their favorite is to have it on waffles in the morning before school.

The family enjoyed the taste the most. I loved the texture and how easy it was to spread. Much easier than a cold stick of butter out of the fridge.

It has been a long time since I have found a product that does what it says, but our entire family was really impressed with the Brummel and Brown spread. Given how much my husband loves butter, that is saying a lot. Want to learn more ways to use the spread, be sure you visit the Brummel and Brown facebook page. Not only will your food taste good, but it will be good for your family too.

Do you have any food substitutes that have been successful in your house? What do you switch out to help your family stay healthy?

Let's Talk Bums. Yep, let's talk about your bum.

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Cottonelle.

Bums and bathrooms are not a topic I love to talk about, unless we are talking toilet training and 2 year olds. (Which we have covered here on FV before. Want help with your toilet training? Check out Toilet Training Part 1 and Part 2). So the thought of chatting about bums and big people is a little, well, out of my comfort zone.

But...

A few months ago our family was introduced to a fantastic new product that your family should know about.

SO stick with me, we are talking bottoms, bums, rumps, and backsides today on Family Volley.

Our household has been trying to save money. We are always trying to save, but we are getting more and more serious about it as our kids are getting older and their activities cost more money. One of the things I can't stand spending money on is toilet paper. Why? Because you just throw it away. Ugh! But at the same time you just can't live without it.

We attempted to save on the less expensive brands and found that our kids struggle to use toilet paper that is too thin. So it is one place where we have a few standards.

Then, I was introduced to the Cottonelle Care Routine. The routine consists of using toilet paper and a wet flushable cleansing cloth to give you clean you can really feel. Now, I know that for our kids, wet wipes by far work the best and get them the cleanest. This is not just the case with their bottoms, but wet wipes work the best for dirty faces, dirty hands, and even dirty feet. I know that cars get much cleaner when you use water with the towels and soap, and our dishes get much cleaner when I use water to wash them, not just a dish towel. And my body gets cleaner when I use water with the soap.

Makes perfect sense that it would work the same way with adult bums too? Come to find out, it does. And, on top of that, our family uses a ton less toilet paper. A ton. The flushable wipes have cut our toilet paper usage in half. Especially with the kids. (They tend to use a lot of toilet paper to get clean.)

The Cleansing Cloths are available in a sleek, newly designed, upright dispenser, which looks inconspicuous, even in our guest bathroom)

Now, I will admit, I have swiped a few wipes from our kids over the last 11 years. And when I help take girls to camp for our church, wipes are a staple for a week in the dirt, but, the kids wipes always feel so wet to me when I use them "down there". I cringe a little when I use them because of it. This was my first concern with the Cottonelle Flushable wipes also. I didn't want to be left wet. TMI. Sorry.

Imagine my excitement when I realized these weren't too wet at all. They were comfortable and easy to use, time saving and money saving. Not to mention, they really help the kids keep clean too.

I can also see them being a heaven send if you have just had a new baby. Bathroom after babies just isn't fun, no matter how you look at it.

Enough bum talk for one day. If you are looking for a way to clean up your bathroom routine, look no further. Nothing will leave you feeling cleaner and fresher than the Cottonelle Care Routine. I now know from personal experience. And I am a believer.

SO.. would you consider using a cleansing cloth?

P.S. Cherry Healey, who is gutsy enough to talk about anything, is getting people talking about how they "wipe". You have to check her out. She is a superstar to take on something so personal. Maybe if I had her accent, I would feel more confident about talking about the topic.

Cottonelle wants to get you talking about your bum and on a better way to clean “down there” by using the Cottonelle Clean Routine. By combining the use of Cottonelle Toilet Paper and Cottonelle Flushable Cleansing Cloths, the Cottonelle Clean Routine is a revolutionary way to keep your bum cleaner.
Are you ready? Don’t be shy! Visit http://www.facebook.com/cottonelle to learn more about the Cottonelle Clean Routine and join the clean routine conversation.

5 Tips To Make Back To School Shopping More Fun

It is sad to even consider that it is almost time to send the kids back to school. I feel like the summer is just beginning. But, the truth is, school starts for our kids in less than 4 weeks. Ugh, where has the time gone.

This year we will have a 6th grader, a 3rd grader and a kindergartner. It is nearly impossibly for me to consider that this is the stage of life we are in. I am sure we just had our first child. And now he is starting his last year in elementary school.

There is still a ton to get done before we are ready to head back. On the top of the list is back to school shopping.

Shopping isn't usually on the top of kids "favorite things" list. In fact, it can often feel like pulling teeth to get them to participate. The challenge is to get them excited so the experience isn't miserable for everyone.

Here are a few tips to help make back to school shopping more fun for the whole family.

1. Start with the school supplies.

Teachers have probably started sending home the lists of school supplies each of your children need. Most kids still get excited about backpacks, new binders, crayons, pencils and markers. Instead of starting with clothes shopping, start with the fun stuff. Plus, school supply shopping takes less time than shopping for clothes which means kids will have more tolerance for the process. This is also a great place to let your children express their personalities. There are clothes we won't buy our kids, and trends we won't follow. But if our daughter wants her backpack to be tie die with peace signs, so be it. Better than on her pants. :) (Not that I have anything against tie die or peace).

2. Make it special.

When possible, leave the other kids at home and make back to school shopping a special experience for each child. Make a day of it. You could even add a fun treat like an ice cream cone before or after, or a quick lunch at your child's favorite restaurant. This can give you and your child a few minutes to chat, break the ice and bond. It can also take a lot of the focus off the shopping and put it on the fun stuff.

3. Ask for their options and feedback.

When our children are small we can make more of the decisions without consulting them. As they get older, give them choice. Ask them what stores they would like to visit. Ask them what items they would like to add to their wardrobe. Ask them what they need and what they want. Giving them choices, wherever possible will help our children feel in control and they will be more likely to cooperate and support shopping for back to school.

4. Have clear expectations before hand.

Take a few minutes to have a conversation about what is going to be acceptable and what isn't. Can your kids buy any style clothes they want? Are there certain stores that are not acceptable? What about a budget? If your kids are old enough you can talk about how much can be spent. Making expectations clear before hand gets you and your children on the same page and can save you from dressing room melt downs.

5. Leave the kids at home.

There are many children who don't care about back to school shopping at all. That is okay. They do not have to go with you. Measure them for sizing, and sit them down for a fun "what do you like" quiz. Take inventory of their favorite colors and styles and save the stress. Keep your receipts so you can return the things they don't like, or that don't fit. Then when you get home, have a fun "try on session".

With three kids to clothe for school, we are always looking for great deals. This year we added a new favorite store to the list, Gordmans. After visiting last week, it is already one of our daughters favorite places to go. Gordmans carries name brand apparel for all ages at up to 60% off. They carry everything! Footwear, fragrances, furniture, clothes, even toys.

On top of that, their stores are fun! Our whole family had a blast. They have a coloring station where younger kids can watch TV while older kids are shopping, and a "grandstand" in the men's department where you can watch sports. Plus, Gordmans wants to save you money and thank you for shopping. Their gRewards loyalty program gives you points for every dollar you spend and a $10 reward for every 200 points you earn.

Remember, when it comes to back to school shopping, it is all about making it a good experience for everyone. The last thing we want is for our kids to look back and have bad memories of being dragged from store to store or being forced to wear things they didn't like. They will never like back to school if that is the case.

Could you use a little extra spending money for back to school? Be sure you enter the sweepstakes for $1000 + $100 to Gordmans. All you have to do is reply to the conversation. Quick and Easy. Good Luck!

"Sparkle On"- Where I Race a Host on Local TV to Eat a Marshmallow

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Glaceau fruitwater®

Over the last few years I feel like I have grown stronger than every before. I feel I have been tested and tried and much has been required. I have had need for strength I didn't know I had. And still I have tried to "sparkle on."

A few weeks ago I was given the opportunity to work with fruitwater®. Their campaign message is to "sparkle on." To share times and situations where you have been faced with unexpected challenges, funny situations, when life happens, and you shine on, sparkle on, and keep going.

Well today, even though it makes me look silly, I had the opportunity to sparkle on. I had two segments on our local TV show, Studio 5. The first segment was two really fun games for families. Unexpectedly, the host asked me to play along with the second game. Not what I was expecting at all. I wanted so badly to say "no" but knew that I had to say "yes." I am not in the habit of putting myself in public situations where I embarrass myself. You can see for yourself what happened.

I asked my husband after the segment if I made a fool of myself. He said "no, it was great." I tried to believe him, but worried. I re-watched the segment, and you know what? It felt good to let my guard down and be myself. It felt good to be a little goofy and roll with the unexpected. It wasn't half bad

How exciting that there is a company who believes in letting our guard down and being strong when things get uncomfortable, or difficult. I think the challenges over the last few years made today easier. The experiences have given me courage and a sense of humor about myself and life.

Glaceau fruitwater® is a great tasting, naturally flavored sparkling water beverage that contains no juice. They are available in flavors such as black raspberry, orange mango, strawberry kiwi and watermelon punch. They are delicious and perfect for a middle of the day pick me up. Not to mention, I love the shape of the bottles.

As important as
fruitwater® great flavors, is their message. We all have what it takes to sparkle through unexpected challenges, brushing off our shoulders in sparkling style.

What is your drink of choice?
So, did I make a fool of myself? It's okay, you can be honest. :)
When have you had to be strong and "sparkle on"?

Glaceau fruitwater® is a great tasting, naturally flavored sparkling water beverage that contains no juice.
Now that you’ve read about my “sparkling truth”, it’s time to share yours! A sparkling truth is a moment when you sparkle through unexpected challenges, brushing yourself off in a bubbly style. Family Fun Friday - FILL THE CUP!

It has been a while since we have had a Family Fun Friday. But with school out, it is time for some fun and some new ideas, Don't you think?

In honor of the crazy hot temperatures that are hitting here in Utah today, (they say it will hit 99 degrees. Yikes!) This game is going to help your family get active, and get outside and cool off. And, laugh a lot in the process. It is normal when kids get out of school, to find them in front of technology a lot. Tame the technology and encourage your kids to play outside for at least 60 minutes a day. This game, and the water fight that will most likely follow, will keep them entertained for at least an hour.

This game would be perfect for children's birthday parties too. Another tip, I like to get my mirrors, pitchers, and cups at the dollar store. That way you can get as many as you need, without breaking the bank.

Here is what you need.

Clear Plastic Cups
Small Handheld Mirrors (1 mirror for every two people)
Blindfolds
Pitchers (Or fairly large cups)
Water Supply

How to Play...

Divide your family into teams of 2.

Each team is given a plastic cup, mirror, and pitcher or cup of water. If you go with the cup, you will want it to be pretty big.

Have one teammate sit down on the ground, and with one hand, hold the empty cup on their head. With the other hand, they will hold the mirror in front of them.

The second teammate stands, blindfolded, above their partner who is sitting on the groud and holds the pitcher (or large cup) full of water.

Here is where things get good. The teammate on the ground with the mirrow, now has to use the mirror to direct their blindfolded partner. Giving them directions to fill the cup up with water that is ON THEIR HEAD! Yep, plan to get a bit wet.

Teammates are not allowed to touch one another, only direct with verbal feedback as to what teammate two has to do to pour the water from the pitcher into the empty cup on the top of their partners head.

Once the cup is full, the teammates switch places and do it again. This time the one who poured is on the ground with the mirror, and the one who sat the first round is now blindfolded and pouring.

The first team to finish both tasks, WINS!

Your entire family will love this game. Just don't be suprised if it turns into a water fight at the end.

Over the past few years, Family Volley has featured a ton of great games to play with your family and friends. If you want to see them all in one place, click on the BUY THE BOOK button at the top right of your screen. I will send you an amazing compilation of all of them. It is the perfect solution to the "mom, I'm bored, that you might be hearing all summer.
If you are looking for something for your kids to do this summer, why not have them enter the NFL Play60 Invention Content. Send them outside and challenge them to invent a new game. Whether they win or not, at least they were out having fun and moving. The contest ends on July 12, 2013 at 11:59:59 PM EST.

Happy Tuesday!!!

House Fried Rice -What's For Dinner

Love being involved in a sponsored post with Success Rice.

After a really fun response to the Carbonara Rice with Chicken recipe I posted a few months ago, I thought I would share another family favorite. I would eat this every. single. night. if I could. It is that good.

Plus, it is a quick way to get dinner on the table so your family can spend some quality time together.

I love Chinese Food, Sweet and Sour Chicken, Cashew Chicken and especially House Fried Rice. There is a "hole in the wall" Chinese restaurant on 3rd South here in Provo that has THE best fried rice in town.

So instead of stressing over what to make for dinner tonight, I offer you the best fried rice recipe you can make at home. And believe me, I have tried many a fried rice recipes. On the table in 20 minutes. You can't beat that.

Two quick side notes: You don't have to use chicken and shrimp in this dish. It is fantastic without meat at all. Use it as a side dish if you want. And, if you don't like shrimp, or don't have chicken on hand, use what ever you have. It is great with ham, beef, chicken and shrimp. My favorite is to have all four meats, but I don't always have ham and beef on hand.

Second side note: This dish comes together very VERY fast. So it is best if you have all the ingredients prepped and ready before you start. Makes everything easier and faster. I have spelled out the steps one by one, but don't be overwhelmed. It is crazy easy to make.

Chicken and Shrimp Fried Rice.

3 Cloves of Garlic (you can use more if you really like Garlic)

6 Tablespoons Butter, Divided

1 teaspoon Lemon Juice

1/2 Medium Onion, finely chopped

1 1/2 Cup Frozen Peas and Carrots

1 1/2 Cups Cooked Chicken/Shrimp/Ham and or Beef

3 Eggs, beaten

3 Cups cooked Success Rice White Rice, Chilled (When I am short on time, I just throw the rice in warm. Comes out great)

4-5 Tablespoons Soy Sauce (or more to taste. I usually use 5-6 tablespoons)

2 Green Onions or Scallions, chopped

Salt and Pepper

Preparation:
Cook your Success Rice. It boils in the bag, so it is quick, ready in 10 minutes and really easy. When it is done, open it up so it can start cooling down. Just toss the bag in the freezer to speed up the cooling process. Or you can spread it out on a cookie sheet covered in foil (no messy clean up) or on a cutting board. You can also put it in the freezer to really speed up the cool down process.

Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in the microwave. Add the garlic and lemon juice to the melted butter and stir. Set the mixture aside.

Chop the onion and green onions. Measure out the peas/carrots, meat, rice and soy sauce.

Beat the eggs in a small bowl.

In a large non-stick skillet, melt the remaining 4 tablespoons of butter over medium heat.

Add the onions and sauté until transluscent. It usually takes about 5 minutes.
Add the peas and carrots and cook for 3 minutes

Then add your diced chicken, shrimp, etc... Cook for 1 minute

Push all of the ingredients to one side of the skillet to slow the cooking process. I like to slightly offset my pan on the burner, so the food isn't on the heat.

On the empty side of the skillet, add the eggs. Season with salt and pepper and scramble as they cook.
Add the veggies to the eggs once they are starting to set. Move the garlic and veggies off to the side also.

Add the garlic mixture to the pan and use a spatula to break it up (the butter will have firmed up a bit.) Cook for about a minute or so. Don't over cook the garlic or it will get bitter.

Add the cold, cooked rice and mix it in with the other ingredients.
Add the soy sauce and stir to combine for about 2-3 minutes.
Add the green onions and stir.

Now is the time to taste test. Check to see if you want more soy sauce. I always want more soy sauce.

Remove from the skillet and serve.

Eat and Enjoy. I promise your family will ask for seconds!

What is your favorite kind of food? Chinese, Mexican, American, Indian? Now I am hungry!

Travel the World with Africa and One Life - Giveaway! #BBCEarth

Scroll Down to Enter to win 1 of 3 copies of the movie AFRICA!!!

We have talked about television and movies here on Family Volley before. Although we don't want screen time to be the only time our family spends together, there are amazing things we can see and learn through movies and tv. It is all about making good choices.

This last week I feel like I have traveled the world. With an opportunity to see the new film One Life, and also to watch Africa as a family, we have visited what seems like over 50 countries and been witness to the amazing lives of animals across the world. Both of these movies are perfect for the whole family.
AFRICA.Savannah Episode (exact episode title and running order TBC)
If you are looking for something to do this weekend, grab a copy of the new movie Africa. It just came out on DVD and Blu-ray, and is amazing. You might have seen it on Discovery Channel in January.

Our children love movies like this! I like them because not only are they interesting, but our family is learning something as we watch.
Our kids can't stop talking about Africa. The movie took over 4 years to make and spans 27 countries. The crew used 553 cameras, spent 100 days on horseback and 601 nights in tents. Not to mention they consumed over 6526 anti-malaria tablets while filiming. Of the 553 cameras used, only 8 were harmed in the making of the film. 1 was chargrilled, 2 were eaten (by a lion and an elephant). 2 mini-helicam crashes and 3 cameras drowned!

Our family watched as lizards hunted for flies on the backs of sleeping lions, and chimpanzees hunted for honey using different tools.

One Life was in theaters last week. Our showing had some equipment difficulties towards the end of the film, but that didn't take away from what we were watching. Still in awe with God's creations, I left the movie impressed with the way ALL animals are trying to do what is best for their babies. Wether it is having babies in the middle of frozen ponds to protect them like the otters, or the strawberry tree frog that carriers her tadpoles up a tree and feeds them every few days.

Animal or human, family is where it's at!

Do you want to win your own copy of Africa?

The Honest Company

If you remember, a few years ago our daughter was really struggling with Eczema. It was so bad that she would scratch her legs until she bled. We tried everything recommended by our doctor and were not happy with the results. Although we saw some differences with the steroid cream, we didn't like that it changed the pigment in her skin. We were desperate for a solution to help her.

On a whim, my husband stopped into a health/nutrition store to ask some questions. We are so glad he did. The nutritionalist suggested we use some essential oils and that would cure her. She was exactly right. The combination of essential oils worked miracles.

As funny as it may sound, the experience changed our family a bit. We became much more conscience of natural products, and eco friendly products. We wanted to make them more prevalent in our families lives.

We now think a little more about what is in the products we buy and the effect they have on us and on our environment.

We are not the only parents who worry about this. I was recently introduced to The Honest Company. Started by parents who were frustrated trying to find products that were non-toxic, safer, and healthy for their own babies. They are working to recreate the family brand. Products that have style, affordability, safety, and sustainability, with service and convenience.

The Honest Company offers more than 20 products. Delivered right to your door. Diapers, wipes, shampoo and body wash, just to name a few. Products for baby, bath and body, and for cleaning. All in beautiful packaging that will inspire you to be more eco friendly in your home too.

The Honest Company products have inspired our family to be even more eco-friendly. We have done this by trading out our old products for more sustainable, eco friendly products that we use every day. Diapers that are disposable but biodegradable. Lotions and body wash that is eco friendly, and Dish Soap that is non toxic and more safe. The beauty of the packaging is also inspiring. It love the way the products look sitting in the bathroom and the babies room.

If you are looking to get back to basics with the products you use in your home everyday, consider using The Honest Company. Everything will be delivered to your door, and you can rest assured that you will not only love the products because they work, but you will love knowing that the choices you are making are better for your family and the future.

The Honest Company was started by a mom and a dad who, like many modern parents, were increasingly worried about products made with questionable chemical ingredients. But the alternatives they found were often expensive, inaccessible, bland, or ineffective. In response to this clear need for something better, they created The Honest Company to ensure that parents (or anyone for that matter!) could easily find natural and non-toxic eco-friendly products that are beautiful, effective, and affordable. From customized product bundles to diapers and wipes to an ever-expanding line of cleaning and personal care products, you can find everything you need at Honest.com and have it delivered directly to your front door.
